SILENT MAJESTY
Silent Majesty was my first-ever big and professional artwork, and it holds a very special place in my journey as an artist.
I created this piece using charcoal powder, and it was a very challenging experience for me—especially because horse drawings are known to be extremely difficult.
Completion Time: 43 Hours

ARTWORK DETAILS
• Title: Silent Majesty
• Size: 70 × 50 cm (Final drawing on Fabriano paper)
• Medium: Charcoal powder, Conte pencil, brushes, mechanical erasers, electric eraser
• Paper: Fabriano (70 × 50 cm)
• Completion: My first professional and large-scale artwork
MY PROCESS – STEP BY STEP
1. Grid Drawing
I first drew the horse using the grid technique on a 60 × 40 cm surface. My grid had 10 cm squares, which helped me accurately transfer the proportions and details.
2. Transferring & Taping on Fabriano Paper
After completing the grid drawing, I transferred it to a larger Fabriano paper (70 × 50 cm). Before I started shading, I stuck masking tape on the edges of the paper to create a clean frame.
3. Starting with the Eyes
I always begin by working on the eyes because they bring life and expression to the drawing. I used Conte pencil for the eyes and paid special attention to the highlights and reflections. I used an electric eraser to draw lights on the eye.
4. Building the Main Values
Before working on the details, I blocked in the dark and mid tones using charcoal powder and soft brushes. Building the values first helps to create depth and a strong understanding of light and shadow.
5. Drawing the Hair
I used Conte pencil for the horse’s hair and blended it using Size 2 and 0 stiff brushes to create depth, direction, and a natural flow.
6. Creating Fine Details
I used mechanical erasers (both large and small) to carefully draw small and big hairs on the skin and other areas that required lighter tones and fine detail.
7. Refining Textures
I continued refining the textures on the skin and muscles using a combination of charcoal powder, Conte pencil, and brushes. Layering slowly and patiently is the key to realism.
8. Final Touches
Once the drawing was complete, I checked the values, increased contrast where needed, and balanced all the details to make the piece more realistic and complete.
9. Fixative Spray
After finishing the artwork, I applied fixative spray to protect the charcoal from smudging. I used several light coats from a distance in a well-ventilated area and let it dry completely.
10. Removing the Masking Tape
After the fixative was completely dry, I carefully removed the masking tape. Be careful to peel the tape slowly at a low angle to avoid damaging or tearing the paper.
TECHNIQUES I USED
-
Grid Technique: Used a 60 × 40 cm grid with 5 cm squares to ensure accuracy in proportions and placement.
-
Charcoal Powder: For rich dark tones and smooth blending.
-
Conte Pencil: For the eyes, hair, and finer details.
-
Brushes: Size 2 and 0 stiff brushes for blending with precision.
-
Mechanical Erasers: Large and small for lifting highlights and creating individual hairs.
-
Electric Eraser: To create the lights in the eye.
-
Masking Tape: To secure the paper and create a clean border.
-
Fixative Spray: To protect the finished artwork from smudging.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Silent Majesty taught me so much about working on a large scale and using charcoal effectively. Every strand of hair and every highlight was a challenge, but the process was incredibly rewarding. This piece is not just a drawing of a horse; it represents my growth, dedication, and passion for realism.
